Faculty Member Killed On Cal State Fullerton Campus

FULLERTON, CA — The body of a faculty member was found Monday on the Cal State Fullerton Campus, just days before the start of fall classes. Police are looking for his killer, the Fullerton Police Department said.

Officers responded to the 600 block of Langsdorf Drive, to Lot S, a parking area south of College Park, shortly before 9 a.m. Monday morning. There, they found the body of Steven Shek Keung Chan, 57, of Hacienda Heights, stabbed to death inside of a silver Infinity sedan.

There were "numerous stab wounds across Chan's body," Fullerton Police Lt. Jon Radus said during a press conference. Life saving measures were attempted, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both Chan and the assailant were of Asian descent, Radus said, however the motive for the crime is not yet known, Radus said.

The campus was not locked down; however, students were notified, officials said.

CSUF officials stated that Chan "a retired administrator working as a consultant on campus."
University officials also said that counseling and support services were being offered for anyone needing such assistance.

The campus police were not aware of any specific threats that had been made against Chan, Radus said. Fullerton Police is investigating the homicide, with the assistance of the Cal State Fullerton Police Department.

The suspect is an adult Asian man in his 20s, with black hair, wearing black pants and a black shirt, Radus said. He was last seen on foot, heading eastbound on Nutwood, headed toward the Marriott area.

Bloodhounds sought the suspect's trail, and camera footage of the area remained under investigation. Police believe the stabbing was an isolated incident.

"We do not believe that there is an active 'stabber' on the loose," Radus said.

It was not known if the suspect remained armed.

"Do not confront (him) if seen, but call the City of Fullerton Police with any information," the spokesperson for Cal State Fullerton said in their email to students.

Police asked all to avoid the area.

A separate active shooting drill that was planned in the area of the Cal State Fullerton library was not related to this incident, the university has said. That event has since been cancelled.

A shooting later in the day, where Buena Park Police fired upon the driver of a stolen car who rammed them, was not related, Radus said.
