Man Wanted For Homicide Arrested In OC: Police Seek More Suspects

Authorities Tuesday announced the arrest of a suspect in a homicide case that happened nine months ago.

SANTA ANA, CA — A man facing homicide charges was arrested this week for a crime that happened nine months ago, and Santa Ana police asked the public for help in finding additional suspects.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office charged 22-year-old Santa Ana resident Ruben Oswaldo Cielo with alleged involvement in the March 29 shooting death of 35-year-old Johnny Daniel Mercado, according to authorities.

Cielo was arrested last Wednesday and booked into Santa Ana Jail, the Santa Ana Police Department reported.

According to police, Mercado was found with gunshot wounds to his upper body in the area of Jerry Drive and Trask Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives were asking the public for help locating additional suspects in the case, and asked anyone with information to call 714-245-8390 or Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS.

Authorities said the case is eligible for the Gang Homicide Reward Program created in May 2007, which offers rewards of $100 to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest of gang homicide suspects.
