GARDEN GROVE, CA — An Orange County family is reeling from grief and shock after an evening bike ride turned into a nightmare, NBC Los Angeles reported.

Garden Grove mother Angela Hernandez Mejia was enjoying a bike ride with her husband and three children, ages 6, 5 and 8 months old, when their riding party was struck by a suspected drunk driver just a few blocks from home at around 7:35 p.m. Sunday in the 12300 block of Haster Drive at Twin Tree Lane.

According to the report, Mejia's received back and hand were injured as a result of the crash, though that was of little concern to the mother as her son, Jacob, remained unconscious Tuesday.

"It hurts. It hurts so bad," Mejia said. "We're here in the room, trying to stay with Jacob. He's not doing okay. His brain is not responding. I just pray to God that he makes it."
