200+ Traffic Stops Made, 187 Tickets Issued in Peninsula Crackdown

Law enforcement agencies throughout San Mateo County participated in the San Mateo County Saturation Traffic Enforcement Program on Wed.

The following is a news release from the San Mateo County Police Chiefs & Sheriff Association:

On Wednesday, Feb. 17, twenty-four traffic officers from various law enforcement agencies throughout San Mateo County participated in the San Mateo County Saturation Traffic Enforcement Program (S.T.E.P.). This was the second deployment of a collaborative effort to increase traffic safety and awareness in known trouble spots throughout San Mateo County in 2016.

Traffic officers focused their efforts in trouble spots in San Mateo and Foster City and conducted saturated traffic enforcement and education to crackdown on drivers and pedestrians who violate traffic laws meant to protect all roadway users. Officers made in excess of 200 traffic enforcement stops and issued 187 citations. Of the 187 citations issued:

    • 58 were for cell phone violations
    • 18 were for seatbelt violations
    • 15 were for speeding violations
    • 12 were for texting cell phone violations
    • 10 were for failing to stop at a stop sign
    • 10 were for failing to stop at a red light
    • 9 were for failing to give the right of way to a pedestrian

Additionally, two drivers were found to be driving on a suspended license and two drivers were cited for being unlicensed.

The participating officers remained committed to making a high volume of traffic stops in this coordinated saturation effort, while maintaining the highest levels of community awareness and professionalism. The number of stops and citations during this most recent deployment reflect a sustained enthusiasm for this program and traffic safety on the Peninsula.

This is the second deployment in a number of planned multi-agency saturation deployments scheduled to be performed throughout San Mateo County in the coming year. The San Mateo County Police Chiefs and Sheriff’s Association and the Redwood City Area of the California Highway Patrol have all committed to this important safety initiative. These planned multi-agency saturation deployments will continue throughout San Mateo County in 2016.
