On Sunday June 8 local non-profits and Marin Youth of the Mount Tamalpais Ocean Conservation Club will celebrate World Oceans Day with ocean activities, education and live music. The event will recognize the importance of the San Francisco Bay and adjacent Pacific Ocean to the residents of Marin County by joining with community groups and youth near the water’s edge. Local non-profits will host aquatic activities and the Marin group Ukulele Friends Ohana will hold an ukulele performance and play along.
Lead by local ocean champion David McGuire of Shark Stewards, the Ocean Conservation Club joins hundreds of other educational institutions, conservation organizations, and thousands of individuals in dozens of countries around the world to celebrate our shared ocean on World Oceans Day.
“This year we are proud to join with the newly formed Mount Tamalpais Ocean Conservation Club celebrating the oceans, recognizing the challenges to our Bay and ocean and creating solutions,” said David McGuire. “We are celebrating all ocean and Bay life from plankton to sharks.”

Officially held on June 8th of each year – is an opportunity to celebrate our world ocean and our personal connection to the sea. World Oceans Day, which had been unofficially celebrated every 8 June since its original proposal in 1992 by Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008.
We can help make others more aware of the importance of the world’s ocean in their daily lives by showing them ways to improve their impact on the ocean by, for example, reducing plastics use, and limiting CO2 emissions. In joining with thousands of people all over the world in celebrating World Oceans Day, we can make a real difference for our oceans of life!
