Happy (B)Earth Day, Wonderful World!

Cabrillo School students gathered to sing and sign to Louis Armstrong's rendition of "What A Wonderful World."

On Friday, April 12, the school day for Cabrillo School began with a touching tribute to Earth Day. Students gathered outside to sing and sign to Louis Armstrong's rendition of "What A Wonderful World."

Each grade was dressed in a specific color of the rainbow. Under Principal Thomas Stafford's watchful gaze, students were led on to the schoolyard by their "family" leaders.

The families concept is one where older students lead group activities for younger students. For example, eighth graders will go into a kindergarten class and work with their younger peers on an emergency drill or community-building project.

The bouyant mood began with squeals of delight from the students as the scissor lift was raised so that photographer Michael Douglas could get an aerial shot of the scene.

According to Stafford, Ila Payne-Dwyer, 7th & 8th grade teacher, led the event along with her Leadership Council, a group of students from 6th to 8th grades.

"She came up with the idea and gave everyone the instructions on how to teach the sign language," Stafford said.

Students at each grade level stood up to sing one stanza of the song and then as a group for the final portion.

"What a Wonderful World" is a song written by producer Bob Thiele (as "George Douglas") and composer/performer George David Weiss. First recorded by Louis Armstrong and released as a single in 1967, Armstrong's recording was intended to serve as an antidote "for the increasingly racially and politically charge climate of everyday life in the United States," but it also served as a message of hope and good wishes for the future"

"It ain't the world that's so bad but what we're doing to it and all I'm saying is, see, what a wonderful world it would be if only we'd give it a chance. Love, baby, love. That's the secret, yeah. If lots more of us loved each other, we'd solve lots more problems. And then, this world would be better." — Louis Armstrong recording.
