Pacifica Rotary Launches 'Name That Fog' Contest

Enter your favorite name for Pacifica's summer fog, raise funds to provide third graders with dictionaries, and win a week's stay at a fabulous resort in Matazlan, Mexico!

“Vallemist!” “San Pedro Particulate!” Can you come up with a clever name for Pacifica’s summer fog?

The Pacifica’s Rotary Club would like to know. The organization is hosting a contest called Name That Fog, seeking creative names for the fluffy white stuff that periodically visits our coastside during the summer months.

“The Eskimos in Alaska have 100 names for snow,” said Steve Wright, Rotary’s president. “With that inspiration, Rotary decided it would be fun to generate a list of clever names for our fog and, at the same time, raise funds to provide dictionaries for every third grader in Pacifica and support other Rotary projects.”

The dictionary project cost is about $5,000 for approximately 450 students, according to Rotary Public Information Chair Ginny Jaquith, and any additional funds will go to support the Rotary Club’s other projects, including Rotary Plaza, free swim days for kids in the child care program, RotoCare, Fog Jog sponsorship, micro credit projects, and the eradication of Polio world-wide.

“This will be our eighth year of the dictionary project,” said Jaquith. “It started as a district-wide (Rotary district 5150) project and we have continued to make it a local project for these eight years. As you might guess, seeing the excited looks on all the student‘s faces when they receive the dictionaries makes all the work getting there worth it.”

This is the first time the Rotary has hosted the Name That Fog contest.

“We are excited about its potential,” said Jaquith. “In fact, our first entry has come in from Iowa!”
