Preschoolers Pedal Through Rain to Raise Money for School in Annual Trike-A-Thon

The Pacifica Co-Op Preschool's annual Trike-a-Thon fundraiser has been a tradition for more than 20 years, rain or shine.

On the Sunday before Halloween, a mini Chewbacca, a sumo wrestler, a police officer, several Ninja Turtles, plenty of princesses and 40-plus other preschoolers lined up their trikes and bikes on the starting line, waiting for the signal.

The children pedaled—some furiously, some cautiously, and some cycled right off the track and were kindly guided back on course by event staff, i.e. the parents and teachers who organized the Pacifica Co-Op Nursery School’s annual Trike-A-Thon fundraiser.

Contenders rode tricycles or bikes with training wheels, and a few brave souls pedaled on just two wheels. Many were decked out with streamers and stickers for the big event; all had been sponsored by friends and family who pledged dollars to fund improvements for the Co-Op.

Did I mention it was pouring rain? No matter—in fact it added to the sense of adventure. Children rounded the track as many times as their little legs would take them for 15 minutes, or until they were pooped, whichever came first.

The rain eased a bit after the big ride, just in time for the event to open up to a carnival where Co-Op parents and teachers manned booths and kids enjoyed Halloween-themed face painting, pumpkin bowling, pumpkin decorating, a noodle toss and more games.

Much-needed re-fueling was provided in the form of delicious biscuits and homemade fruit compote from Assemble to Order, a local catering company run by a former Co-Op family. Other refreshments were generously provided by Oceana Market, Perfect Pour, Mazetti’s Bakery, Noah’s Bagels, and Target.

“So many smiling faces and friends playing and proud bike riders truly make this such a sweet day,” sad Jessica Stone, a Co-Op parent who has organized Trike-A-Thon for the past three years.

The Co-Op, often called the Rainbow School for the colorful arc decorating its entrance, was founded in 1960 and offers a unique, magical environment for preschoolers. A team of teachers executes a lively, enriching curriculum while also offering support and guidance to parents. The Trike-A-Thon has been ongoing for more than 20 years.

“The Co-Op is truly the best kind of ‘village’ to be a part of and I am always moved by how everyone comes together to make our school amazing,” Stone said.

Stay tuned for the preschool’s big spring fundraiser, Rainbow Fest, with even more games and interactive activities, plus musical entertainment for the kiddos!
