The Getty Fire: 5 Important Facts

Firefighters continue to battle the Getty Fire in preparation for the worst Santa Ana windstorm of the year.

LOS ANGELES, CA — A little more than a day after the Getty Fire erupted close to the 405 Freeway near the Getty Center, firefighters are doing their best to combat the 658-acre blaze.

The destruction, though, has the potential to become much worse in the next 40 hours, as an incoming windstorm is projected to bring gusts of up to 70 mph into the region and possibly spread the devastation far and wide.

1. Residents in Los Angeles should text NotifyLA at 888-777 to automatically receive emergency alerts by text regarding fire threats and evacuation procedures.

2. Because the most intense Santa Ana windstorm of the year is anticipated Tuesday night and Wednesday, the Getty Fire evacuation zone is expected to remain in place through Tuesday night.

3. The cause of the fire remains undetermined, but authorities confirmed reports that witnesses saw a power pole near the 405 Freeway become engulfed in flames at the start of the fire.

4. Residents evacuated in the Brentwood area are being urged to remind household staff such as housekeepers, gardeners and nannies about ongoing evacuation orders.

5. Some of the most expensive homes in the country were in the path of the flames, which chased many celebrities from their homes. Lakers star LeBron James and former governor and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger both had to evacuate.
