2,500 Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Kids To Get New Shoes

"The Shoe Distribution Program is a simple yet powerful way to help the next generation in our community rise above their circumstances."

PALM DESERT, CA — The Foundation for Palm Springs Unified School District announced the receipt of a $20,000 grant Monday, targeted at financing new shoes for students for the 2024-25 school year.

Delivered through an Impact Grant presented by the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation and News Channel 3, the money will benefit approximately 2,500 socioeconomically disadvantaged students, according to the district foundation.

More than 97% of students in the district fall into that classification, with about 12% of PSUSD students living in unstable conditions, including at least 2% verified as unhoused, officials said.

"The Shoe Distribution Program is a simple yet powerful way to help the next generation in our community rise above their circumstances," PSUSD Foundation Director Ellen Goodman said in a statement. "This type of support lays the groundwork for students to reach their full potential."

The Shoe Distribution Program is in its third year, a collaboration with the PSUSD Board of Education, the district superintendent and The Foundation, a charitable organization that pilots and underwrites existing, underfunded initiatives.

A study found that 100% of students who received new shoes "(felt) confident to express opinions with classmates," as opposed to 35% before the gift. The same study also found modest increases in academic confidence, social engagement and athletic confidence within the first few weeks.

"Well-fitting shoes are a back-to-school essential, as important as backpacks and pencils," said Catharine Reed of the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. "The Foundation for PSUSD is addressing a fundamental need that is necessary for both physical health and psychological well-being."
