After Pipe Bomb Found In Palm Springs, Police Issue Advisory

PALM SPRINGS, CA — Police Wednesday urged Palm Springs residents to be on the lookout for explosive devices after a pipe bomb was discovered near a popular trailhead.

Officers were sent to the area of Southridge Drive and Rim Road about 4:50 p.m. Tuesday on a report of a suspicious device and located a pipe bomb near the entrance to Araby Trail, spurring police to clear the area and call in the sheriff's bomb squad.

The sheriff's Explosive Ordinance Team detonated the "active explosive device" on site, according to the Palm Springs Police Department. No injuries were reported.

Palm Springs police said they have yet to figure out where the bomb came from or why it was placed near the trailhead. No arrests have been made.

"Several questions remain unanswered and the public should always be aware of their surroundings," according to a police statement. "If you see something suspicious, say something."

Police provided a series of tips to residents who encounter a possible suspicious device:

-- do not ignore it and assume it's already been reported;
-- call authorities; and
-- stay away.
