• County fire stations open for tours during 'Fire Prevention Week' (kesq.com) — Palm Desert families can tour Fire Station No. 33 on Town Center Way during a countywide open house on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Firefighters will offer kid-friendly station tours and hands-on tips for safely charging electronics and preventing home fires, giving residents a close look at local crews and equipment.
   

• Firebirds name John Hayden as team captain (kesq.com) — Palm Desert hockey fans have a new leader to cheer for as the Coachella Valley Firebirds name veteran forward John Hayden their second-ever team captain. Hayden, a longtime fan favorite who loves the valley community, will wear the "C" when the Firebirds open their season Friday, Oct. 2 at Acrisure Arena against the Ontario Reign.
   

• Newsom signs bill requiring Riverside County Sheriff and Coroner offices to be separated (kesq.com) — Palm Desert residents should know that Governor Newsom has ordered Riverside County to separate the sheriff and coroner roles by mid-2027, despite opposition from the Palm Desert City Council. Councilmembers recently sent a letter arguing a new statewide law already ensures independent in‑custody death reviews and stressing the need to preserve local control over how county government is organized.
