Carrizo Canyon Hike

Description: Carrizo Canyon is open October through December and this docent led hike takes you into a canyon that provides a chance to see the endangered Peninsular Bighorn Sheep and other desert critters. Learn about the geology of the area and a great outdoor experience close to downtown Palm Desert.

Overview: This easy hike (Rating below 50) is generally suitable for anyone who enjoys walking. Mostly level or with a slight incline.

Time: 8:30AM – 11:00AM

Difficulty: Easiest (Rating: 40); For more information about the Difficulty Rating: Shenandoah Hiking Difficulty Scale

Distance: 3 miles

Elevation Gain: 392 feet (equals 40 flights of stairs)

Terrain & Obstacles: This trail is in a sandy wash with uneven terrain. As the canyon narrows there will be some rocks and small boulders to hike around and step over. Full sun exposure for the duration of the hike.

Requirements: Minimum 2 liters of water and a snack, Closed-toe shoes, No dogs allowed

Recommended: Sunscreen and hat, Hiking poles, Long sleeve shirt

Meeting Location: We will meet at the Art Smith Trailhead parking lot located just past the driveway for the Visitor Center approximately 100 feet on the southwest side of Highway 74.   UTM Coordinates: 33.667957, -116.407666
