INDIO, CA — A 42-year-old motorist was killed and two other people sustained major injuries when a minivan traveling the wrong-way on eastbound Interstate I-10 in Indio collided head-on with another vehicle, authorities said Tuesday.
The crash was reported shortly after 9:30 p.m. Monday on the Monroe Street off-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol. A silver Mazda MVP traveling the wrong-way onto the Monroe Street off-ramp crashed head-on with a white Hyundai Sonata that was exiting the freeway.
The impact caused the Mazda to catch on fire with the driver trapped inside the vehicle. The motorist, who was identified only as a Cherry Valley man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Hyundai, identified only as a 62-year-old woman from Indio, and a passenger identified as a 58-year-old woman from Indio were taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.
