Another CV Link Segment Set To Begin Construction In Palm Springs
The planned 40-mile-long CV Link is designed to provide an alternative for cyclists, pedestrians and slow-speed electric vehicles.
PALM SPRINGS, CA — Another segment of the CV Link in the Coachella Valley is set to begin construction next week.
On Tuesday, the Coachella Valley Association of Governments and the city of Palm Springs will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at 9 a.m. in the city's Demuth Park to celebrate the construction kickoff of a nearly 3-mile long segment of the planned 40-mile CV Link. The Palm Springs site is a future CV Link access point, according to city officials.
The CV Link is designed to provide an alternative for cyclists, pedestrians and slow-speed electric vehicle drivers who want to avoid Highway 111 motor-vehicle traffic. The Coachella Valley project is being built largely along the Whitewater River, and will eventually extend from Palm Springs to Coachella. Future route segments include connections to Desert Hot Springs, the eastern unincorporated communities of the Coachella Valley and the Salton Sea. The project has a cost estimate of nearly $100 million.

According to the CVAG, it has raised the capital needed to fully fund the CV Link project with a large portion of the funding from grants for active transportation projects. Funding sources include the California Active Transportation Program, Caltrans, South Coast Air Quality Management District, California Strategic Growth Council, Desert Healthcare District & Foundation, Congestion Mitigation & Air Quality Improvement Program, and the Riverside County Park and Open Space District, according to the agency.
Three segments of CV Link are currently open. The first runs 2.3 miles between Ramon Road in Cathedral City and Vista Chino in Palm Springs; the second segment is approximately 1 mile long and runs adjacent to Demuth Park in Palm Springs; the third is on-street in the city of Palm Desert and consists of 3.5 miles from the Bump and Grind trailhead to the College of the Desert, ending at the wash near Deep Canyon Road.
