Bicyclist Critically Injured In Crash, Leads To Lengthy Road Closure In Palm Springs

PALM SPRINGS, CA — A vehicle and bicyclist collided early Wednesday, prompting a temporary road closure on northbound Highway 111/N. Palm Canyon Drive and Tramway Road in Palm Springs. The circumstances of the crash and any injuries have not yet been released as of noon.

Shortly after 8:30 a.m., emergency responders headed to the crash scene at SR-111 and Tramway Road, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.

"Based upon the preliminary investigation, the bicyclist moved into traffic in front of an oncoming vehicle, which then struck the cyclist," Capt. Gustavo Ariaza said. "Following the initial collision, the vehicle that struck the bicyclist was rear-ended by another vehicle."

The bicyclist, whose identity was not released, suffered critical injuries and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.

The drivers and passengers of the involved vehicles were not injured, and all remained at the scene, cooperating with the investigation, according to Araiza.

As of 2 p.m., the roadway reopened to traffic after a lengthy closure.

It was not immediately known if drugs or alcohol were factors in the chain-reaction crash.
