BNP Paribas Open Women's Singles Qualifying Play Set Begins Monday

The qualifying field includes Andrea Petkovic of Germany, who rose to ninth in the Women's Tennis Association singles rankings in 2011 but was sidelined for more than seven months in 2012 because of a low back injury followed by an ankle injury.

Women's singles qualifying play for the 2013 BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament is scheduled to begin today at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, with 48 players from 23 nations seeking 12 berths in the 96- player main draw.

The qualifying field includes Andrea Petkovic of Germany, who rose to ninth in the Women's Tennis Association singles rankings in 2011 but was sidelined for more than seven months in 2012 because of a low back injury followed by an ankle injury. She is now ranked 177th.

Also competing is Coco Vandeweghe of Rancho Santa Fe, a finalist in the 2012 Bank of the West Classic and a niece of former NBA player and executive Kiki Vandeweghe.

Play was set to begin at 10 a.m. on the outside courts. Admission is free.

Men's qualifying play is scheduled to begin Tuesday, women's main draw play Wednesday and men's main draw play Thursday.
