Parent and Teen Perspectives Behind the Wheel

A rite of passage into mature adolescence for the young, but a growing fear for their parental figures.

Before the age of sixteen, the very prospect of driving seemed like a distant impossibility obscured within miles of a desolate road. However, as my junior year of high school began, so did my desire to reach this fleeting hope from the driver's side.

My parents were hesitant (and mildly shocked) by my sudden enthusiasm. It appeared as though they too viewed the idea of me driving as a distant impossibility, questioning whether or not this was the same girl who was just learning how to walk only a few short years ago.

After careful consideration, my parents agreed to teach me the fundamentals of driving—a process they assured would take time to fully master. Our practice sessions started out as simple lessons on the function of each dial, switch, and button inside the car.

It was here when my father first allowed me to turn on the ignition. It was also when I first noticed the traces of anxiety etched on his face as he watched me smile every time the engine came to life at the turn of a key.

My first experience behind the wheel came with my mother's supervision, as the small space inside the car continued to shrink from nervous tension. I retained my composure and followed her guiding instructions, knowing that I was learning from an experienced driver.

I am very grateful that my parents are cautious about my driving endeavors with the knowledge that they act as role models in a positive and influential light. Although the experience of driving may be a milestone for teenagers, it will always double as an impending worry for parents.
