Discover how the desert comes alive after dark! Do you know which animals change colors when you use a blacklight?
Using blacklights, a Friends’ volunteer docent will begin a short walk on uneven cobbled desert terrain in the basin below the dike/levy looking for scorpions and other nocturnal creatures that inhabit our desert.
This is a family friendly event. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Bring water, wear closed-toed shoes and a black light if you have one. If not, we will have a few black lights to share. Sorry, no dogs allowed on this trail.
Tickets will go on sale two weeks prior to the event. RSVP is required, check-in 15 minutes prior to start time. Friends of the Desert Mountains volunteer astronomers will be setting up their telescopes and are inviting you to stop by any time while they are there to view the ever-changing display of fascinating objects to see — stars, constellations, bright planets, moon and sometimes meteors.
This is a family friendly event. Minors must be accompanied by parent or guardian. Bring water and wear closed-toed shoes.

Description: The Carrizo Canyon Ecological Preserve opens for the season on October 1st. This docent led hike takes you into a canyon that provides a chance to see the endangered Peninsular Bighorn Sheep and other desert critters. Learn about the geology of the area and a great outdoor experience close to downtown Palm Desert.
Overview: This easy hike (Rating below 50) is generally suitable for anyone who enjoys walking. Mostly level or with a slight incline.
Time: 8:00AM – 10:30AM
Difficulty: Easiest (Rating: 40); For more information about the Difficulty Rating: <a href="https://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/how-to-determine-hiking-difficulty.htm" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Shenandoah Hiking Difficulty Scale</a>
Distance: 3 miles
Elevation Gain: 392 feet (equals 40 flights of stairs)
Terrain &amp; Obstacles: This trail is in a sandy wash with uneven terrain. As the canyon narrows there will be some rocks and small boulders to hike around and step over. Full sun exposure for the duration of the hike.
Requirements: Minimum 2 liters of water and a snack, Closed-toe shoes, No dogs allowed
Recommended: Sunscreen and hat, Hiking poles, Long sleeve shirt

Grab your binoculars and join a Friends’ volunteer docent birding expert to look for our feathered desert residents. In this unique urban area, we are still able to find a little native desert environment surrounded by local trees and shrubs that many of our feathered friends call home. As you walk the perimeter of an open desert property adjacent to the golf course, you will find approximately 25-30 different species on your 1-mile walk-about. This is truly a “jewel in the desert” location to be enjoyed.
Bring your binoculars, 1 liter of water, a sun hat, sunscreen and wear close-toed shoes. Sorry, no dogs are allowed for this event.

Discover the wonders of the night sky at the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument!
Join Friends of the Desert Mountains and the Astronomical Society of the Desert for a free evening of stargazing beneath some of Southern California’s darkest skies. Volunteer astronomers will guide you through the cosmos, sharing fascinating stories while helping you explore planets, star clusters, nebulae, galaxies, and other celestial wonders through a variety of telescopes.
Whether you’re an experienced stargazer or looking through a telescope for the very first time, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience the Monument after dark and connect with the natural world in a whole new way.
What to Bring
<ul><li>A chair for comfortable viewing</li><li>Water and weather-appropriate clothing</li><li>A red-light flashlight if you have one (please avoid white flashlights whenever possible to preserve everyone’s night vision)</li></ul>
Important Information
<ul><li>Children are welcome and encouraged, but must be accompanied by an adult at all times.</li><li>Our volunteer astronomers are happy to help everyone enjoy the telescopes. To keep the equipment properly aligned and provide the best viewing experience for all guests, please allow volunteers to operate and adjust the telescopes.</li><li>This event is wheelchair accessible on asphalt.</li><li>The program is offered weather permitting. Excessive heat, cloud cover, or other unsafe conditions may require cancellation. Please check Friends of the Desert Mountains’ social media channels before leaving home for the latest event updates.</li></ul>
