“We are Soul—you, me, and every individual, every embodiment. We are Soul,” said Harold Klemp. “We take on a physical body and this body goes through the experiences of infancy, youth, middle age, and old age. We go through all these experiences, and then the body is dropped, or dies, because it’s worn out. But Soul is eternal; It has no beginning or ending. This is the message that I’m trying to bring to you today. You are Soul, and you can enter the kingdom of heaven while still in the physical body.”
I was once told this story which illustrates how attached we can become to the physical body when we die and how that attachment can be overcome by divine love.
There was a woman, a student of Eckankar, who had a friend named Mary who was going on 90. As the daughter of a minister, Mary had enjoyed frequent visits to church throughout her life. Recently however, Mary had been unable to attend services, as the pews were too hard and the sermons too long, but the tenets of the Christian faith held strong in Mary’s heart.
Suddenly, Mary's health began to decline over a period of weeks. At the hospital, Mary’s son was told to take his mother home as there was nothing they could do for her. Mary lingered in a vegetative state for several days.
The woman telling the story said she fell asleep one evening watching the 6:00 p.m. news and had a very clear dream about Mary. In the dream she saw Mary lying in bed. To the right of Mary was her deceased husband. He was wearing a suit and sitting in a straight-backed chair with his legs crossed, just waiting.
The dreamer felt that in death, as in life, Mary was being strong. She remembered hearing stories about Mary's female relatives who had all lived well into their nineties, so Mary had always thought she would too. The dreamer said it felt like holding on was what Mary thought she was supposed to do. Gently the woman told Mary in the dream that it was okay to let go and that her husband was waiting for her.
Later when the woman woke up she reflected on the dream and hoped her friend had been released. Confirmation came quickly. Within an hour she received a phone call that Mary had passed. How grateful she felt to have helped her dear friend with this one final task!
Such experiences are not uncommon. “Life and Death really have no borders; it’s all part of the continuum of life,” writes Harold Klemp, in his book, Unlocking the Puzzle Box, Mahanta Transcripts, Book 6.
One way to uplift yourself spiritually is by singing HU. HU (pronounced hue) has been sung by millions for years to bring comfort, peace and love. With eyes open or closed, take a few deep breaths to relax. Place your attention very gently on the Spiritual Eye (a point between and behind the eyebrows). Then begin to sing HU in a long, drawn-out sound HU-U-U-U-U. Take another breath, and sing HU again. Sing HU with a feeling of love and it will link you with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Families are welcome! A children’s table with fun activities will be available. Food and fellowship will be offered during a break. For more information about the workshop or Eckankar in your area call: (909-328-9922) or go online to ECK-ca.org.
