Drive Launched to Benefit Needy Students

People are asked to drop off brand new backpacks, pencils, binders, erasers, rulers, glue and other school supplies at Walmart on Monterey.

SunLine Transit Agency on Thursday will host its second annual “Pack the Bus” backpack and school supply drive, encouraging the public to bring new, unused backpacks and school supplies to be donated to students who can’t afford them.

People are asked to drop off brand new backpacks, crayons, markers, pencils, note pads, binders, erasers, rulers, glue and other school supplies at a SunLine bus that will be parked in front of Walmart at 34500 Monterey Ave. from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“We have the perfect vehicle to fill and deliver these much-needed backpacks and supplies to local kids, and we encourage those in all local communities to come out ... and help us pack this bus,” said Lauren Skiver, general manager of SunLine Transit Agency.

This year’s beneficiary will be the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, which will identify the needy students and make the donations.

Representatives from SunLine and the rescue mission will be on hand to greet donors.
