Grant Allows PD Elementary School To Purchase New Computers

A matching grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation made the purchase possible.

now boasts 35 new computers thanks to a matching grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation.

“These new, cutting-edge workstations allow our students to access programs and websites that build critical skills in areas like language, math, science, typing, and research in a fun and engaging way,” said Jeff Hisgen, the school’s principal.

The foundation gave $7,925 to the school to complete the $15,925 project, allowing the school to purchase 35 HP Thin Client computers.

This enables 655 students to have weekly access to computers that are efficient, Hisgen said.

“Before the Berger Foundation generously stepped in to help, our computers were 12 years old. The time needed to fix problems was a distraction, and took away from learning time,’’ the principal said.

First through third graders will get 30 minutes per week, fourth and fifth graders receive 40 minutes weekly on the computers. The lab will also used before and after school for intervention programs in math and writing.

The school’s Parent Teacher Organization was able to raise nearly $8,000 through a walk-a-thon and other contributions, according to Hisgen.

Catherine Reed, senior program officer at the foundation, said the organization was happy to help.

“Not all schools are given the same resources by the state. When you see involved, hard-working parents doing everything they can to give their children the best educational opportunities possible, it is rewarding to assist in that effort,” Reed said.
