Knife-Wielding Suspect Wounded In Officer-Involved Shooting: Cops

One officer suffered a moderate injury in the Palm Springs incident, police said.

PALM SPRINGS, CA — A man allegedly waving a knife and threatening people Thursday afternoon on South Indian Canyon Drive in Palm Springs was shot and wounded by police, with one officer also suffering a moderate injury during a fight with the suspect, according to authorities.

After receiving several 911 calls at about 4:17 p.m. reporting a man with a knife and a physical altercation occuring near Camino Parocela and South Palm Canyon Drive, officers responded to the area and saw a suspect who matched the witnesses' description, the Palm Springs Police Department said.

"The man failed to comply with officers’ commands," the department said. "The man fought with officers which led to an officer-involved shooting."

The injured officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment, and the suspect also was hospitalized with a non-life threatening injury, police said.

"There is only one suspect involved in this incident, and there is no threat to the public’s safety," the agency added. The man was not identified, and additional details on his condition were not released.

Roads closed for several hours following the incident included South Indian Canyon Drive between Ramon Road and Camino Parocela and South Palm Canyon Drive between Ramon and Camino Parocela.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation.
