The nomination window for the Coachella Valley Pride Honors Awards opened Monday, with this year's slate of honors to include a new award dedicated to LGBT activist George Zander, who died in December.
The George Zander Social Justice Award was created to recognize individuals for their commitment to human rights and social justice, leadership and community advocacy on social justice issues, according to Greater Palm Springs Pride.

Zander died Dec. 10, at the age of 71, in the wake of an alleged hate attack in downtown Palm Springs that left Zander and his husband hospitalized in November.
The accused attackers, Christopher James Carr and Keith Edward Terranova, both 35, are due next in court tomorrow for a felony settlement conference.

Ron deHarte said this year's awards were "extra special" due to the inclusion of the Zander Award.
"Organizations are encouraged to consider nominating their volunteers or longtime supporters. For businesses, this is an excellent opportunity to recognize employees and customers who support the LGBT community through their work or actions," deHarte said.
"The Pride Honors event is an opportunity for us to reflect, recognize those who are making a difference and offer encouragement to a new generation," he said.
Nomination submission forms are available at www.pspride.org . The nomination period ends June 3.
