New Store Spices Up El Paseo

Mary Cardas, owner of Savory Spice Shop, has had a steady stream of foot traffic since she opened the store last month.

If an irresistable armoa of spices isn't enough for a stop into Savory Spice Shop on El Paseo, then owner Mary Cardas' knowledge of cooking might be.

Cardas opened Savory Spice Shop in Palm Desert last month after visiting another of the Denver-based chain's store in Corona Del Mar. She also researched the best place to open up shop in the Coachella Valley.

She landed on Palm Desert and decided to go all in on the El Paseo location.

"There's a culture of entertaining here," Cardas said, adding that the store is set up for general needs and several special categories.

During a quick visit to the store on Tuesday afternoon, a handful of customers came in, each with their own unique question.

"Have you ever heard of something called butter extract?" one woman asked. "It's called for in one of my recipes."

Cardas, who previously worked in small manufacturing, thought for a moment, seemingly stumped before pulling out her iPhone, and laughing at a description of the imitation butter flavor.

"This suggests adding some additional vanilla," Cardas said. "The other thing to add is vanilla for the liquid portion and a little more salt. If you are looking for a butter flavor, then a little salt might get it for you."

She said she does not waive off customers with difficult questions. She is willing to do the research to find an answer, and even has several reference books on hand.

A grand opening is set for Dec. 1 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., when several chefs will cook their favorite dishes with the store's spices, Cardas said.
