Palm Desert Celebrates May as National Building Safety Month

From The City of Palm Desert: The City of Palm Desert is recognizing the importance of Building Safety throughout May as it celebrates National Building Safety Month 2018.

First observed in 1980, the annual event raises awareness about critical safety issues including: fire prevention; structural issues; plumbing and mechanical systems; and energy efficiency. The Palm Desert City Council will officially declare May 2018 as “Building Safety Month” at its May 10 meeting. Building codes, and the officials who enforce them, make our families and communities safer and more resilient. Homes and buildings that are built in compliance with building safety codes result in resilient structures that minimize the risk of injury, death, or property damage. Building safety affects everyone and modern, updated building codes save lives. Weekly themes for this year’s

Building Safety Month include:

• May 1 – 5: Partnering with Code Officials to Build Stronger, Safer Communities
• May 6 – 12: Advancing Resilient Communities through Science & Technology
• May 13 – 19: Protecting Communities from Disasters
• May 20 – 26: Safeguarding our Water
• May 27 – 31: Improving Education & Training Standards for a Safer Tomorrow

Throughout May, Palm Desert’s Building & Safety Department staff will be answering questions and providing informational handouts as well as activity books for the kids.
