Palm Desert Stars Chosen In MLB Draft

David Schuknecht and Ryan Garvey were tabbed to play professionally.

Two players from Palm Desert High’s CIF -up baseball team were selected in the middle rounds of the Major League Baseball Draft today.

Palm Desert catcher David Schuknecht was chosen by the Colorado Rockies in the 12th round, while Aztec centerfielder Ryan Garvey was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 15th round.

“I’m feeling great,” Garvey told Patch. “I’m excited that I was chosen by Philadelphia. It’s great.”

Garvey said he was just as excited for Schuknecht being chosen by the Rockies.

Schuknecht, a right-hand hitter, hit .411 with 3 homeruns and 25 runs batted in for Palm Desert this season. He was chosen 370th overall.

Garvey, son of baseball legend Steve Garvey, hit .372 with team highs in homers (9) and RBIs (44).   Ryan was projected to be picked as high as the third round by experts, fell to 481st overall.

Garvey said he’s already been talking with Phillies scouts and discussing summer ball. When asked if that changes his to go to USC in the fall, he said: “it’s possible, but everything is an option.”
