PD’s Hewko and Doubles Teams Advance in CIF Tennis

Palm Desert boys look solid at CIF individual regionals, most advance to round of 16 next week.

After dominating the DVL individual tennis championships, Palm Desert kept rolling in the opening of the CIF individuals on Friday.

The DVL Champion doubles team of Blake Eggleston and Chris Bastardi were given the #1 seed in their CIF regionals at Redlands, and didn’t disappoint. After a first round bye, the duo swept opponents from Arroyo Valley and South Hills in straight
sets.

Aztecs Jack Felich and Nick Cummins were seeded #2 in the regional, a testament to the overall strength of Palm Desert this season. Like Eggleston and Bastardi, they were also given a first round bye before dispatching their next two opponents.

Both Palm Desert doubles teams now have a spot in the CIF "Sweet 16."

Palm Desert fared well in singles, with DVL Champion Abe Hewko moving easily through his first two matches. Hewko went on to defeat #4 seed Tomas Aranquiz of Ayala High to secure a spot in next week’s CIF Round of 16 for singles.

It didn’t go as well for Palm Desert’s Aidan Korros. The senior dropped his first match, and retired with injury late in his second match.

There is no word if the injury is serious enough to keep Korros out of Palm Desert’s CIF team semi-final on Tuesday.

CIF individuals continue with the round of 16 and quarterfinals on Friday in Seal Beach.
