Investigators determined the woman was walking near Highway 74 and Haystack when a vehicle veered onto the walkway, officials said.

PALM DESERT, CA — A 65-year-old woman from Palm Desert was killed Monday morning when she was struck by a vehicle that apparently swerved across Highway 74 and onto the sidewalk where the woman was walking near Haystack Road, officials said.

Deputies were called at approximately 7:20 a.m. to the report involving the pedestrian and a vehicle, where the female was found to be suffering injuries from the collision, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said. Despite life-saving attempts from first responders, the woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle involved, a 61-year-old man from Palm Desert, was found "unresponsive" in his car, deputies said, adding that life-saving measures were performed and he was taken to an area hospital. His condition was not released.

Investigators said it appeared the man was traveling south on Highway 74 in a Nissan truck, when "for unknown reasons," his vehicle veered across the northbound lanes, and onto the east sidewalk striking the female pedestrian, the department said.

While the cause of the collision remains under investigation, alcohol did not appear to be a factor, deputies said.
