PALM SPRINGS, CA — Due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases around the globe and in Riverside County, Palm Springs International Film Society officials announced Wednesday that the annual Film Festival set for next month has been canceled.

The Palm Springs Film Festival was set to take place January 7-17 with screenings in the city. Earlier this month, PSIFS officials announced the cancellation of the January 6 Film Awards, a one-day indoor gala that kicks off the festival and attracts thousands of people.

But with the ongoing increase in new COVID infections, the PSIFS said it was halting all in-person Film Festivals events for January.

"After thoughtful consideration, the Film Society feels this is the most responsible decision to ensure the safety of our patrons, filmmakers, and staff," PSIFS officials said Wednesday. "Those who have purchased festival tickets and passes will receive a refund. For most, the refund will be returned to their original method of payment."

The Film Awards will partner with Entertainment Tonight to celebrate this year’s honorees with details to follow, according to the PSIFS. Juried award winners from the official selection will be announced on January 15 via a press release and social media.

The Film Festival and Film Awards won't return to in-person events until January 2023, officials said.

For now, the Palm Springs ShortFest, which celebrates short films, is scheduled to return to the city this summer, June 21-27. So far, in-person gatherings for the event have not been canceled.
