Salton Sea-Themed Calif. License Plates Becoming a Reality
Sales of the plates will help fund future restoration efforts of the Salton Sea.

The following is a news release from the office of Assemblyman Brian Nestande:
Assemblyman Brian Nestande, R-Palm Desert, announced Tuesday that Assembly Bill 1096 to create the Salton Sea License Plate has been signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown. This completes a two year effort by Nestande to create the license plate which was designed by a Coachella Valley high school student through an art contest organized in conjunction with the Palm Springs Art Museum and the Desert Sun Newspaper.
“The Salton Sea License Plate would not be possible without the tremendous outpouring of support it has received from so many individuals in the Coachella Valley,” said Nestande. “This license plate will not only serve as a symbol of the proud the heritage of the Salton Sea, but it will also help fund future restoration efforts from the proceeds it generates from its sale.”

In June of 2013, Nestande unveiled the winning design that will be used for the license plate. Designs were voted on by the public on the Desert Sun’s website with the ten most popular designs advancing to a panel of judges from the Palm Springs Art Museum. The panel then selected the winner who received a scholarship of $1,000. The four runners-up designers also received scholarships of $500 each.
The Greater Palm Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau recently launched a campaign to market the sale of the license plate to motorists. People interested in purchasing the license plate can go to Nestande’s website to express their intent to buy the license plate by clicking here.
