Say, 'I do!' to The Wedding Singer at Palm Canyon Theatre

The Wedding Singer is set in 1985.

From The Palm Canyon Theatre: Summer is a popular wedding season even at the Palm Canyon Theatre where audiences will soon say, “I do,” to the company’s latest production – The Wedding Singer. The musical comedy is based on the 1998 film of the same name, which starred Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. The production premiered on Broadway in 2006 and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical that same year. Palm Canyon Theatre will present the show July 6-15.

The Wedding Singer is set in 1985. The story centers around Robbie Hart, New Jersey’s favorite wedding singer and rock-star wannabe. In the movie version, Sandler played Robbie. On the PCT stage, Shafik Wahhab will take center stage as the life of every party… that is, until his fiancée leaves him at the altar. Wahhab will sing movie favorites, including “Somebody Kill Me,” co-written and made famous by Sandler, but he and the cast will also perform original numbers written specifically for the stage version. Music in The Wedding Singer is by Matthew Sklar, with lyrics by Chad Beguelin, and book by Beguelin and Tim Herlihy.

Shortly after Robbie’s heartbreak, he connects with Julia, played by Elizabeth Schmelling, who was last seen at PCT as Louise in Gypsy. Julia is about to marry her Wall Street boyfriend, Glen, played by PCT newcomer Cameron Merrihew, who has performed in College of the Desert productions. But in typical Rom-Com style, the audience roots for Robbie to get the girl.

The Wedding Singer is choreographed by Anthony Nannini, a triple-threat and audience favorite on the PCT stage, and it is also Nannini’s directorial debut. Jaci Davis will lead a four-piece ensemble as the production’s musical director. Derik Shopinski is the show’s costume designer. Set and lighting designs are by J.W. Layne.

The Wedding Singer runs only seven performances at the Palm Canyon Theatre beginning Friday, July 6 through Sunday, July 15. Show times are 7 p.m. on Thursdays, and 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
