Solar Panels Installed on Palm Springs Convention Center

The panels are expected to offset an impressive 59% of the typical annual electric load in the first year and increase the following years.

From The City of Palm Springs:Palm Springs has partnered with SolarCity to install, operate, and maintain 1926 solar modules on the roof of the Palm Springs Convention Center. With the cost of electricity expected to double over the next 20 years due to continued utility rate increases by SCE, Palm Springs was determined to find a green solution to provide a more affordable and sustainable alternative to electricity. Solar power systems derive clean, pure energy from the sun, whichin turn helps combat greenhouse gas emissions and reduces dependence on fossil fuel.

The turn-key solution implemented is for SolarCity to fund the cost of the project, including the design, installation, operation and ongoing maintenance. In return, the City pays a reduced fixed rate for the electricity produced to SolarCity over the life of the contract.

The solar panels are expected to offset an impressive 59% of the typical annual electric load in the first year and increase in subsequent years. This green solution, perfect for a city known for its 350 days of sunshine, will produce a net saving of approximately $2M over the life of the contact, with the added benefit of producing clean energy.

“We are very excited to add the solar power array to our already robust sustainability program. Along with our recycling, composting and other energy conservation measures, the center is truly a sustainable meeting location”, said James Canfield, Executive Director of the Palm Springs Convention Center and Bureau of Tourism.
