Two Students Hospitalized in Cathedral City School Bus Crash

CHP says a Ford Explorer merged right into a school bus as they were trying to make a left-hand turn Tuesday.

Two students were taken to a hospital after the school bus in which they were riding got into a fender bender with an SUV in Cathedral City Tuesday, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesman.

The crash was reported at 7:25 a.m. on 30th Avenue west of San Eljay Avenue.

A Palm Springs Unified School District bus, driven by 43-year-old Maria Jimenez of Coachella, was in the left-turn lane on 30th Avenue when a Ford Explorer driven by 42-year-old Cathedral City Gonzolo Lopez Jr., merged into the bus's path, CHP Officer Joe Zagorski said.

The bus's right front bumper struck the SUV's left front fender, Zagorski said.

"As a result of the collision, several students riding on the bus complained of pain tovarying body parts and two juveniles were subsequently transported to Desert RegionalMedical Center for treatment of complaint of pain," he said.

Lopez received minor injuries and was treated at the scene, Zagorski said.

There were 44 students on the bus. The conditions of the two students taken to the hospital was unknown, according to Zagorski.
