Russian Maria Sharapova, who is also a part-time Southern California resident, overpowered Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai 6-2, 6-2.

Sharapova seemed to struggle to get going early on in the match Monday, but eventually got into a groove.

Sharapova, who was champion at Indian Wells in 2006, will either play Australian Samantha Stosur or Russian Dinara Safina, who is the former world number one.
