Whiz Kid: Mary Homen

She'll be competing in five events over the next few months as part of varsity color guard at Palm Desert Charter Middle School.

Name: Mary Homen, age 12

School: Palm Desert Charter Middle School, 7th Grade

Accomplishment: Mary Homen not only embraces the discipline it takes to artfully supplement her school band but has discovered this passion at an early age. She's one of several dedicated youngsters that performs on Palm Desert Charter Middle School's varsity color guard.

"I joined Color Guard Workshop for P.E.," Homen said, "volunteered for Tall Flags, who followed the band, and won several awards and was invited to join Winter Guard competitions for varsity.

"I'll be competing with my school at five events in the next two months."

Key to Awesomeness: "Awesomeness is a hard word to explain since different people see it differently," Homen told Patch. "Some people think it is about being cool. Some people think being cool is not going along with the flow. 

"I think the key to awesomeness is anything that you like to do that makes you excited. You should not let other people tell you that what you are doing is wrong or stupid. If you like it and you have fun with it, then it is awesome.

"Usually you can find other people who like what you like. Trying to do something you like with other people that other people might enjoy watching is totally awesome. Sharing it with others is the key to awesomeness."
