Women's, Men's Singles Qualifying Play Happening at BNP Paribas Open

The winners of each of Tuesday's 12 women's qualifying singles matches will receive spots in the 96-player main draw.

INDIAN WELLS, CA- Women's singles qualifying play for the 2016 BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament is scheduled to conclude Tuesday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, while men's singles qualifying play is set to begin.

Play will begin at 11 a.m., with gates opening at 10 a.m. Admission is free.

The winners of each of Tuesday's 12 women's qualifying singles matches will receive spots in the 96-player main draw.

Anna-Lena Friedsam of Germany, the top-seeded player in the women's singles qualifying draw, will face Santa Monica resident Nicole Gibbs in the third match in Stadium 3.

Friedsam defeated Julia Glushko of Israel, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 on Monday, while Gibbs was a 7-5, 7-5 winner over Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland.

Gibbs used her Twitter account to apologize to "the small child I essentially kicked out by saying, "can we get some quiet during points," I'm sorry. Much like u, cranky when tired.

"But seriously I hate when players are under-appreciative of their fans, especially the little ones, so I apologize."

Gibbs was 95th on the Women's Tennis Association singles rankings issued Monday, nine spots higher than the previous week, thanks to reaching the quarterfinals of the Abierto Monterrey Afirme in Monterrey, Mexico. Gibbs, who turned 23 on Thursday, is a two-time NCAA singles champion from Stanford.

Friedsam is ranked 61st.

Gibbs was among 10 Americans in the original 48-player qualifying field. Taylor Townsend and Julia Boserup were the other winners.

Townsend defeated 15th-seeded Russian Evgeniya Rodina, 6-2, 7-6, Monday to advance to face 11th-seeded Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia, a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Jessica Pegula, the daughter of Terry Pegula, the owner of the NFL's Buffalo Bills and NHL's Buffalo Sabres.

The 19-year-old Townsend received a wild card berth into the women's singles qualifying draw by winning the BNP Paribas Open Challenge pre- qualifying tournament.

Boserup, who also received a wild card berth into the women's singles qualifying draw, defeated ninth-seeded Russian Elena Vesnina, 6-4, 6-3, and will face 21st-seeded Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic, a 6-3, 6-1 winner over American Raveena Kingsley.

Tuesday's losing players will each receive $3,565 while the winners are guaranteed at least $11,970, the amount of money losers in the first round of the main draw receive.

Yuichi Sugita of Japan is the top-seeded player in the 48-player men's singles qualifying draw. He will face Australian Matt Reid in the third match in Stadium 9.

Tuesday's losing players in the men's singles qualifying play will each receive $1,825, while the winners are guaranteed at least $3,565.

The ATP World Tour Main Draw ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. in the Stadium Plaza. Fans will be chosen to assist on stage and have their picture taken with a player or to receive prizes.

Women's main draw play is set to begin Wednesday and men's main draw play Thursday.
