Xavier College Preparatory High School seniors have received more than $2 million in college scholarships, the school announced Friday.

“It is very rewarding to our students, parents, and faculty to see that our students have earned over $2 million in scholarships just based on their academic achievements,” said Jennifer Baker, a counselor at the school.

The students were accepted into a total of 162 colleges, including California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo and Pomona, Loyola Marymount University, Brigham Young University, Gonzaga University, Cal Baptist University, , Colorado State University, University of San Diego, University of Mississippi, Seattle University and University of California at Davis.

She said that scholarships are important during the down economy.

“We are seeing the private colleges and universities step up and provide large awards to students who have worked hard in high school and desire to further their education,” Baker said.

Last year the cost of tuition at a four-year public college or university was $7,605, while the cost of tuition at a four-year private college or university exceeded $27,000 annually, according to Laura Hall, the school's spokeswoman.

This year's seniors will be the schools only second graduating class in Xavier's history. Out of the 77 graduates, about 25 percent of the students will be the first in their family to attend college, Hall said.
