Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of slaves in the United States. The holiday marks the anniversary of Union Army Gen. Gordon Granger reading General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. It began, "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free."

The Palm Springs Black History Committee aims to preserve and share the stories of Black pioneers whose impact helped shape the history of the city and the Coachella Valley, organizers said.
