3 Juveniles Busted For Alleged Car Theft in Palo Alto

BREAKING: A security officer attempted to stop the teens as they were trying to get into vehicles parked on Santa Rita Avenue, police said.

PALO ALTO, CA – Three juveniles were arrested early Tuesday morning in Palo Alto after they were seen allegedly committing auto theft, police said.

At 12:47 a.m., police received a call from a private security officer reporting a vehicle theft in progress in the 400 block of Santa Rita Avenue.

According to police, the security officer witnessed three male suspects pulling door handles on cars that were parked on the street, and then saw them enter one and rummage through it. When the officer attempted to
stop them, they drove away in a white 1997 Honda Civic, police said.

The security officer provided police with a license plate number of the Honda as it fled the scene with the suspects inside.

At 12:53 a.m., a police officer located the Honda in the 800 block of Center Drive and detained the three suspects without incident.

Inside the vehicle officers found a bag containing handgun ammunition, and a pair of sunglasses that were stolen from an unlocked vehicle on Santa Rita Avenue. One of the suspects was also in possession of a
personal check from the same unlocked vehicle.

All three suspects are residents of East Palo Alto, police said. Their identities are not being released because they are juveniles. They were arrested on suspicion of felony possession of stolen property, felony
conspiracy, misdemeanor theft, and misdemeanor minor in possession of ammunition, police said.

A 17-year-old suspect who was driving without a license, as well as a 16-year-old suspect were arrested and then released to their parents. The third suspect, 17, was transported to the Santa Clara County Juvenile
Hall when his parents could not be reached, police said.
