Baby Sign Language, Music and Movies in the Park, Fun with Robots and More!

Five fun, kid-friendly activities going on in Palo Alto or nearby over the next week.

Where/When: , 3921 Fabian Way, Palo Alto. This Sunday, July 24, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Why Go: Finally, a family event you can take the dog to, as well as the kids! Join the JCC this Sunday for a day of fun at their Open House, including demonstrations, activities and giveaways for both canines and humans. Activities will include a free family Zumba class, a dog costume contest, dog obedience demonstrations, pet adoption consultations, and a kids’ zone complete with a bouncy house, playground, face painting and more. NOTE – you must bring a leash at least four inches in length for your dog, and your dog must have all current vaccinations.

BABY SIGN LANGUAGE

Where/When: , 299 S. California Ave., Palo Alto. Weekly on Saturdays beginning this week on July 23, 12-1 p.m.

Why Go: Sign language has been proven to be an effective way to teach babies a way of communicating their wants, needs and discomforts. Blossom Birth resource center is holding a series of classes for babies and their parents, beginning this Saturday, July 23. Class time is noon to 1 p.m., and the series lasts six weeks.

Pricing: $125 with one parent and baby, or $165 per couple and baby. Cost covers entire six-week series.

 

BLUES MUSIC AT THE TWILIGHT CONCERT SERIES

Where/When: Rinconada Park, 777 Embarcadero Road, Palo Alto. This Saturday, July 23, 6:30-8 p.m.

Why Go: Bring a blanket and a picnic dinner, and the whole family. The City of Palo Alto’s Twilight Concert Series has kicked off, and the hours are early enough that you still might be able to get the kids to bed relatively on time! This week, tap your feet to some blues music by the band Moonalice.

Pricing: Free!

 

FUN WITH ROBOTS

Where/When: Tech Museum of Innovation, 201 S. Market St., San Jose. Open daily, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Why Go: One of the Tech Museum’s newest permanent exhibits is the “Got Bots?” hands-on science workshop, located on the lower level in the NetPlanet Gallery. Daily activities include playing with a replica Mars Rover, programming a human robot to make a sandwich, designing robots, playing with cute and cuddly pet robots, and much more.

Pricing: Effective July 1, non-member admission for adults 18 and older is $12, or $9 for children age 3-17 and seniors 65 and older. Memberships and IMAX show tickets sold separately.

 

‘HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON’

Where/When: Whisman Park, 400 Easy St., Mountain View. This Friday, July 22, 8:30-10 p.m.

Why Go: Take the whole family to a good, old-fashioned, outdoor summer movie, sponsored by the City of Mountain View. This week, it’s the smash-hit, animated film, How to Train Your Dragon. Even better than the fact that it’s free—popcorn and other light refreshments are served, also free!
