Don't Be a Victim: Bay Area Police Offer Auto Theft Avoidance Tips

BAY AREA, CA -- At this time of the year, it can be really, really cold in cars when stepping outside to warm them up before heading out for the day.

And while you may want to just turn your car on while you go back inside to grab your coffee, purse or something else you may have left behind, the Mountain View Police Department says that you might want to reconsider.

Some see cars warming up in driveways or parking spaces as crimes of opportunity — in addition to places to stay warm. Cars left running, unlocked and unattended can be easy targets for thieves, so here are some tips from the MVPD that can help prevent cold weather crime:

• Never leave your car running or the keys in the ignition when are away from it, even if it’s “just for a minute.”
• Keep things like purses, credit cards and cell phones out of sight. Don’t leave them sitting unattended for all to see.
• Always roll up the windows and lock your car, even if it is in your driveway, garage or in front of your home.
• Be alert when you approach your car, and have your keys in your hand. Check around, and if you see something that makes you uncomfortable, leave the area to get help if you are concerned for your safety.
• If you are out and about at night, only park your car in busy, well-lit areas.
• If your vehicle has an alarm or other anti-theft device, use it.
