Gifts from 82,300 Donors Provided $928.5 Million for Financial Aid, Research, Faculty, Buildings, More at Stanford

Stanford University received $928.5 million in gifts during the fiscal year that ended Aug. 31, reflecting the philanthropic support of more than 82,300 donors.

The fundraising total comprises gifts and pledge payments received from Sept. 1, 2013, through Aug. 31, 2014; it does not include pledges of future support or government grants. The figure includes $87.4 million in support for Stanford Health Care but does not include money raised for Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, which raises funds independently.

“The success of Stanford students and faculty simply would not be possible without the generosity of alumni, parents and friends,” said Stanford President John L. Hennessy. “Their philanthropy has enabled Stanford to build one of the most robust financial aid programs in the country while advancing knowledge and research. I am deeply grateful for their support.”

Annual funds across campus established a new record, raising $84 million in expendable support. This included more than $26 million to The Stanford Fund for Undergraduate Education, which benefits students through financial aid, funding for academic programs and support for student-led organizations. Annual funds are unrestricted and can be used in the year they are received to meet areas of greatest need.

Other gifts added approximately $190 million to Stanford’s endowment.

“This is the fifth year in a row that we have seen an increase in the number of donors making gifts to Stanford,” said Martin Shell, vice president for development. “We believe this is a testament to the direction and leadership of the university and reflects a broad endorsement of Stanford’s mission.”

Funds were raised for key priorities across the university:

• $264.9 million for Stanford Medicine, including construction of the new Stanford Hospital and other initiatives of the Campaign for Stanford Medicine
• $80.7 million for students, which includes $39 million for graduate fellowships and $31.7 million for undergraduate financial aid
• $299.5 million for research and programs
• $65.5 million to attract and support faculty
• $104.8 million for buildings and facilities, including gifts to complete the Shriram Center for Bioengineering & Chemical Engineering and to build a new home for the Anderson Collection at Stanford University

The Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health, which raises funds for the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital as well as child health programs within the School of Medicine, received $101.8 million. This included $53.8 million for the children’s hospital and $48.1 million to the School of Medicine.

Gifts to the university and its two affiliated hospitals raised a total of $982.3 million.
