'For the Love of Palo Alto' To Explore Why We Love Our City

What makes Palo Alto lovable and why does that matter? Come join your friends, neighbors and community members to find out and talk more about why we connect with the place where we live and the impact it can have in terms of civic participation.

Internationally-acclaimed author Peter Kageyama has written a groundbreaking book—“For the Love of Cities: The Love Affair Between People and Their Places”—that has opened up the conversation for people to learn about what makes cities lovable and why that matters in terms of civic participation. Kageyama will be in Palo Alto on Friday, Feb. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Mitchell Park Community Centerto host the City’s own local version—“For the Love of Palo Alto.”

The free, fun and interactive event will bring the community together to talk about how we fall in love with cities, what are the “Most Loveable” cities and how we can learn from them, as well as how people’s emotional engagement can turn into tangible action. As part of the afternoon’s activities, groups will brainstorm on how to make Palo Alto a better, more lovable community with a budget of just $500 and the crowd will vote for their favorite idea.

The City has also released a new mobile app to support its Our Palo Alto community engagement initiative that is now available in the Android store and soon to be available in the iTunes stores and features information about upcoming Our Palo Alto and other community events and outreach activities. During the month of February, users will be able to send Palo Alto a love letter or a picture of their favorite place with letters and images shared on both the City’s website and as part of the “For the Love of Palo Alto” event. The City will be adding additional functionality to the app in the months ahead and encourages the community to download it to keep current on community happenings.
