MyYogaTeacher Announces FREE Mental Health & Wellbeing Webinar Aug 12
Aims to help people take control of their emotions and thoughts which are making them feel angry, depressed, helpless, inert, sad or scared

“There is a mental health crisis in this country impacting many adults, and people are breaking down from feelings of frustration, anger, sadness, helplessness, and being trapped,” says Dr. Savitha Elam-Kootil, an internist at Kaiser Permanente in Atlanta and Advisor to Cupertino's MyYogaTeacher, who executes primary care, chronic disease management and elder care, and is also a physician lead for depression care management, a primary care initiative to improve patient health.
She explains, “A lot of people are going undiagnosed and untreated for mental health issues, since it’s been very hard for patients to access a counselor or psychiatrist due to the increased demand on the system across the board in the United States. ”
According to Dr. Elam-Kootil, the pandemic triggered a wave of emotions and worsened the public’s mental health because it kept people from having normal human interactions, going outside or to work, seeing friends, and even visiting healthcare professionals for preventative care. Others took severe financial hits and suffered disruptions and changes in everyday life.

Major changes in daily routine and financial stability left them feeling unsettled, depressed, anxious, frustrated, and angry, and these feelings are now compounded by fears about a world being transformed by war, climate change, and other issues.
“By the time they come in for their annual healthcare visit, many patients are breaking down, unleashing a lot of pent up feelings, with no one to share just how low they are feeling,” she says.

Dr. Elam-Kootil, who takes a holistic approach towards health, proceeds to offer these patients and those feeling anxiety and stress various breathing, meditation and mindfulness tips which are grounded in yoga philosophy.
“I tell patients that yoga is not just a physical practice with difficult poses, but also a mental practice that can help with breathing, posture, and feeling better emotionally,” says Dr. Elam-Kootil.
