So, we hear Monday, Sept. 18, 2017 is National Cheeseburger Day. Although it’s been verified by the worldwide web, your employer is most likely not going to give you the day off (unless you’ve got a really cool boss who also would rather be eating cheeseburgers!). That doesn’t mean, however, that you can’t hit up a burger joint or two to partake in one of America’s most favorite mouthwatering foods.

But first, let’s take a look at the history of the cheeseburger. The hamburger patties topped with sizzling cheese and served as a sandwich seem to have first hit American bellies in the 1920s and 1930s. And California played a big part in that, because according to legend, the cheeseburger was invented in 1924 in Pasadena by Lionel Sternberger. Prepared at his father’s roadside stand, the Rite Spot, Sternberger called his creation the “Aristocratic Burger” and charged 15 cents for it, according to Visitpasadena.com.

California is also the birthplace of many popular fast-food restaurants that continue to be go-to places for cheeseburgers. McDonald’s dates back to a food stand opened by the McDonald brothers in 1937 in Monrovia; In-N-Out was launched in 1948 in Baldwin Park as the first drive-thru burger place; and the first Jack in the Box opened in 1951 in San Diego.
