Palo Alto City Manager Receives Hospital Treatment

Palo Alto’s City Manager had to be treated at a hospital while on an out-of-state trip. Linda Clerkson, Public Communications manager for the City of Palo Alto, issued this release:

City Manager James Keene suffered a collapsed lung while visiting friends in Charleston S.C., on his way to the Transforming Local Government Conference in Atlanta this week, where Palo Alto was being honored with the Thomas Muehlenbeck Innovation Award for Palo Alto's Open Government: Open Data Initiative.  Mr. Keene was treated at a local Charleston hospital and is recovering at the home of his friends. He was not able to make the trip to Atlanta.

Spontaneous Pneumothorax is most common among tall thin males under the age of 40.  "I meet all the characteristics of that profile except one," Keene said. "I wondered why I felt so lousy as we ran the Cooper River 10K Bridge Run on Saturday with 40,000 other people. I expect my time to be bad in a crowded race like that, but 58 minutes? I think I probably finished at the top though among collapsed lung runners. That's some consolation."

Keene said he wasn't feeling right before he made the trip but thought he was getting a cold. He is feeling much better now and visits the surgeon on Friday for a final checkup and clearance for travel. He expects to miss Monday's Council meeting however.

"I've spoken with Jim and he sounds great," said Mayor Scharff. "All the Council wants him to rest and travel safely home, once he is cleared." Air travel can be restricted in the aftermath of pneumothorax.”
