PALO ALTO, CA — A 15-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly trying to run over a man who’d confronted him and another suspect during a car burglary Wednesday, authorities said.

The other suspect is at large, Palo Alto Police Department spokeswoman Janine De la Vega in a news release Thursday.

The 15-year-old suspect, who is from San Jose, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, auto burglary, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property (all felonies) and misdemeanor hit-and-run charges, police said. He was booked into Juvenile Hall.

The two suspects were first seen by the alleged victim rummaging through his vehicle on the 4000 block of Second Street Wednesday morning. Then after they tried to get away, he followed them to a dead end on the 2800 block of Bryant Street, De la Vega said.

The suspects tried to run over the alleged victim who put his hands up trying to stop them, De La Vega said. The alleged victim, a man in his 20s, suffered minor injuries diving out of the way to avoid being struck by the vehicle but declined medical attention.

The suspects rammed their vehicle into the alleged victim’s car, and they tried to run away after the collision disabled their vehicle, De la Vega said.

The alleged victim chased the suspects who tried to run away and caught up with one of them, De La Vega said. He forced the suspect to the ground and took his picture.

The suspect broke free but police located him on the 100 block of Churchill Avenue, De la Vega said.

Police said the vehicle the suspects used in the alleged incident had been reported stolen earlier that morning in Palo Alto.

Detectives are investigating whether the juvenile suspect in custody is responsible for other crimes similar in nature, De la Vega said.

The outstanding suspect was described by the alleged victim as a Latino boy around 16 years old, 5 feet 7 inches tall and 150 pounds wearing a dark jacket, blue jeans and a medical face mask, De la Vega said.
