Two Teens' View of the Chili Cook Off (by the Phan brothers)

July 4th, 2014 marked Palo Alto’s 33rd annual chili cook-off.  People of all ages came from 12pm to 5pm to enjoy a day that carried a beautiful sunny day; live music from the band, La Gente; chilis ranging from mild to hot, foods including corn dogs, funnel cakes, ice cream; as well as various activities for families.  Kids could be seen throwing footballs and baseballs with their fathers, or kicking soccer balls around with their whole families.  Folks of all ages gathered around a big circle to listen and dance to La Gente, who sang songs from various genres.  Some even brought their own barbeque supplies to party with family and friends.

The 2014 Chili cook off was not most people’s first.  Really, all of the people we interviewed came at least once. We also asked them about their experiences with the chili cook-off.  To our surprise, the chili was not what people were after.  In fact, one man complained that most of the chili was not delicious.  A lady said that only some of the chili was good.  The majority of those people the weather, the other people, and above all, the atmosphere.  People socialized near the food stalls, basked in the mild sun, danced to music, and walked together in huge groups.  My own family came to enjoy the company of friends and even neighbors.  My youngest brother found his friends and their family and spent time with them.

We also asked those people about their thoughts on future chili cook-offs and if they would come to the future cook-offs.  All of them neither hesitated to give positive thoughts nor to say no to our final question.  Generally, they relished that holiday.  It is safe to say that the chili cook off has its place set in Palo Alto’s hearts for years to come.
