Woman Looking For Lost Cell Finds Skull, Femur Along I-280 Near SJ City College

Skeletal remains were found along Interstate Highway 280 near San Jose City College on Thursday evening, the second set of decomposing remains found in the county in two days.

The remains on the freeway were discovered at about 6:30 p.m. by a woman who walked over to the highway area from the intersection of Richmond and Moorpark avenues, California Highway Patrol Officer Ross Lee said.

She had somehow lost her phone beyond a fence separating the neighborhood there from the highway. She jumped the fence to the highway area and found a human skull on the embankment next to the highway, Lee said. The woman became upset and called San Jose police, who called firefighters and the CHP.

They cut a hole in the fence and found the skull along with what appeared to be a human femur, Lee said. The county medical examiner’s office responded to take the remains. Investigators are still working to determine the identity and cause of death.

The finding comes a day after sheriff’s deputies found remains near Gavilan College south of Gilroy. Those badly decomposed remains were found sometime before 4 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Santa Teresa Boulevard and Castro Valley Road, according to the sheriff’s office.

There was some speculation that the remains could be of missing Morgan Hill teen Sierra LaMar, who is believed to have been murdered in 2012, but investigators concluded they were not her remains based on dental work.
